Colours of Lake Moraine

Lake Moraine is a glacier fed lake located in Banff National Park, in Alberta, Canada. It is one of the most visited destinations in Canada. When Lake Moraine is in it’s peak around June – August it reflects a distinctive shade of azure blue. The unique blue colour is due to the refraction of light off the rock flour deposited in the lake by surrounding glaciers. I was inspired to create Colours of Lake Moraine, Banff, due to the beautiful blue colour, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks. Activities you can do here include; hiking, renting a canoe or enjoying some food from the cafe in this stunning spot.

In this blog post I’ll be exploring the natural colours of Lake Moraine from photos I’ve taken across four different trips. This is done by colour picking a ton of swatches from various photos and selecting ones which appear the most and will work well together. Once I have selected my favourite I narrow it down so they are a set of four. The colours of Lake Moraine could change quite dramatically across the seasons due to the amount of rock flour in the water or how cloudy it is. These selects in-particular were taken across variable months of the year.

Celeste

Celeste is the Italian word for heavenly. This shade of blue refers to a collection of shades similar to a clear daytime sky. This is usually a shade or cyan or light teal.

glacier-blue

Glacier

Glacier blue has an icy, calm feel to the shade of blue. It refreshes and revives. Glacier ice is blue due to the red part of white light being absorbed by ice and the blue light is transmitted and scattered. The longer the path light travels in ice, the more blue it appears.

azure-blue

Azure

Azure blue is the colour between cyan and blue on the spectrum of visible light. Azure takes it’s name from the intense blue mineral ‘lapis lazuki’ which is the latin word for stone.

cerulean-blue

Cerulean

Ceruleanl is a shade of blue ranging between azure and a darker sky color. It is a rejuvenating colour that also represents open communication and clarity of thought.
